As I grew older I found myself becoming more and more interested in Disney History. As a child I loved watching movies, but now I became interested in how they were made. Sarah Sterling on Youtube really sparked that interest. She started a series called Down to Disness where she talks about Disney movie history and its impact on pop culture. To watch click here. I found from researching quite a bit, that Disney really set the bar for what is the film industry today. Animation is relatively new which is something I had never really thought about. Of course in this entry I can't touch on every Disney movie ever (although I'd love to). Some of these might be ones you don't particularly like, but every movie on this list bettered the Disney company to make quality movies to this day. The first one obviously being the classic Snow White and The Seven Dwarves. Snow White opened December 2, 1937 at the Carthay Circle theatre in Los Angeles. It was the first full-length animated feature in history and grossed over $18 million in the US. It costed around $1.4 million to make and more than 750 artists worked on the film in the 3 years it was in production. It was also noted as the first movie ever to have a full length feature soundtrack. One thing Snow White and The Seven Dwarves did was start a trend that followed in lots of Disney movies after; having the supporting role play a bigger part than the protagonist itself. In this case, it was the dwarves. Snow White was the second Disney animated film to use the multi-plane camera. It was an invention Disney Studios created that allowed animation cells to show more depth. Two dimensional paintings, which were traditional with animation, could not achieve the illusion of traveling forward in a landscape realistically. This changed the game forever. They started using this effect in many years to come in such films as, Pinocchio and Bambi. It became a key asset in establishing a more believable space for the incredible artwork and character design produced by Disney. As humans and animals became more naturalistic and scenery became increasingly detailed, the multi-plane camera helped to create a more believable world for these objects and characters to inhabit. Another cool trend the movie set for the animation industry was the use of models to set human animation after. The model for Snow White was Marge Champion, a really talented dancer. She would come into the studio to dance and act out scenes. The animators would sit in a circle around her and draw her movements to then animate. This trend also continued into movies like Alice in Wonderland and Sleeping Beauty. These are called live action models! Snow White won tons of awards including an Oscar, in which Walt Disney was . presented with one normal size Oscar and 7 little ones. This film was really the kickstart of the Walt Disney Animation Studios career. The Disney company continued to use hand-drawn animation with the multi-plane camera for another 40 years. Producing movies such as Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, The Jungle Book, and many many more which did pretty well in the box offices. The next big animation growth at the company was the film Who Framed Rodger Rabbit, produced in 1988. Personally, I feel this is a very underrated movie. I love it so much, and I don't think it gets the recognition it deserves. The Disney company at this time had been very interested in live-action and not so much animation anymore. In fact, there was a realistic fear that the Disney company would become strictly live- action with a complete halt in animation forever. This movie combined both, animation and live-action. They tested this out a bit in Mary Poppins when the penguins danced with Burt and Mary. This happened to be the first full-length film to combine these two mediums. Set in Hollywood during the late 1940's, this story is an alternative timeline where animated characters really exist. The film tells the story of Eddie Valiant, a private detective who must exonerate tune character Rodger Rabbit, who is accused of murdering a wealthy businessman. The original budget for this project was $50 million, which at the time was too expensive for the company. So, they put it off until 1985, and it finally went into production in 1987 with a budget of $30 million. At the time this was still the most expensive Disney movie ever made. The Disney Company was convinced this hybrid of live-action and animation would save Disney's animation department. Vista Vision cameras installed with motion technology were used for the photography of the live-action scenes, which would then be combined with the animation. Rubber statues of Rodger Rabbit and other characters were used to portray the animation during rehearsals in order to teach the actors where to look when acting with open air. Many of the live action props that were held by cartoon characters were shot with robotic arms or manipulated by strings.
Because this film was made before computer animation, all of the animation was done using cells and optical compositing. First, animators were given black and white print outs of the action scenes known as photo stats.

Today is Day 5! Probably the hardest at that! There is arguably a hero in every movie. So how can I pick only a few?! Today I have narrowed it down to two heroes. If you want to read about my favorite heroines click here. SimbaAs most heroes, Simba grows into his hero status. In fact in the beginning of the movie Simba can be seen as a coward. He abandons his kingdom and runs away (of course he also thinks he's killed his father). But he is able to make up for this mistake and stops running from his problems. He returns after word of Scar ruining his kingdom and build the empire back up. Simba's guilt over his dads death makes him more courageous and he is able to face his fears. Simba grows into a strong charismatic leader. QuasimodoI just want to give Quasimodo a hug. Quasimodo's story is tear worthy. This is the first time I think there is a male protagonist you can really feel for. Throughout his life he manipulated, lied to, and set up with situations that would make it seem as if he will endure the worst life. But, through all of this pain and misery he stood up selflessly to save the woman he loved. Even when she told him she loved another, Quasimodo understood and was unconditionally supportive. No other male Disney character has showed that type of love toward anyone before. It's refreshing and admirable. There we have it day 5! Who are your favorite Disney heroes? There are tons more out there!
So I am absolutely awful! I was planning on doing this everyday and .... yah it didn't happen. Truth is I'm trying to finish school early and on top of that already have a CRAZY schedule. Sooooo here is day 4... on the 8th. If I can double up on days I will. Or we just might have to go into June. Disney World Planning posts will be quite slow for awhile. Those take some time to write and I just don't have it right now. I'm also starting rehearsals for a show next week. Basically my life is insane, but I love it. Keep checking back frequently just in case I happen to squeeze something in. Ah Princes. One of the best things about a Princess movie. They're charming, kind, and usually very attractive (for... cartoons). I have decided to break this up into 3 sections, The Golden/Silver Age, The Renaissance, and Present. If you're not familiar with Disney Animation ages heres a link to learn. Click here. The Golden/Silver AgeSo, I could be biased about this one because I LOVE Sleeping Beauty. My pick is Prince Phillip. First we should mention this is the first time a Prince was given a name and some type of personality! He's known as brave and heroic while still being easygoing. I can dig it. Also, that jaw line. The RenaissanceAladdin was my childhood crush. In the scene where he reaches for Jasmine and says "Do you trust me?" I melt. Despite his rough upbringing Aladdin is very optimistic throughout his whole movie. He's also intelligent and witty (two things he needs to survive). He loves adventure and is generally very cheery and fun-loving. Sometimes he gets caught up in lies and deceit. but we forgive him because he's actually adorable. The PresentYou KNOW I love me some Flynn Rider. I could argue he's probably the most attractive prince yet. When introduced to us he's arrogant and a trouble maker. Yikes and even then I was like ok Flynn Rider I see you!!!!!!!!!! His ego could be seen as narcissistic, but I choose to see that as confidence....? yah. In the movie though we learn that this is more of a defense mechanism. In reality he's pretty vulnerable and emotional and shows it quite a lot with Rapunzel. Eventually during "I See The Light" we see his caring, starry-eyed persona. (I think Rapunzel really humbles him though) So that is Day 4 (on day 8)! Again I hope to be getting to this more, so check back tomorrow or next time or whenever because Day 5 is favorite hero. And yikes every Disney movie contains one. This will be tough!
Hello! It is May 3rd! Which means today is the 3rd day of the 30 day Disney challenge! Yayyyyyyyyyy! Today I will tell all of you my favorite Disney heroines! Judy HoppsEven thought Judy is small she has some kick to her! She is the first of her kind to become a police officer and shows her true bravery when she solves the case of Mr. Otterton. She's is hardworking and ALWAYS puts others before herself while showing absolute bravery! She breaks so many stereotype roles and is someone I hope a lot of young girls look up to. MulanDo I really need to explain? Mulan is the epitome of a hero and bravery! She takes her fathers place in the Chinese army and proves she is just as capable as any man. AND she singlehandedly saved ALL OF CHINA!!!!! This is a role model if I ever did see one. I <3 her! ColetteThis one is a not so notable character, but I've always really admired Colette. She is the only female chef among a lot of men that work at Gusteau's. She still proves herself to be the most talented one there and is very confident in who she is!! She plays a pivotal role in bringing down the villain of the movie, Skinner, and becomes co-owner of the restaurant. So that is day 3 folks! Tune in tomorrow for day four and the rest of May for more of my Disney OPINIONS! Let me know who your favorite Disney heroines are in the towel section below. Have a magical day!
Welcome back! Today's challenge is who is your favorite princess? So lets hop right in! Keep coming back all May to see each of these days! RapunzelI love Rapunzel! I see a lot of myself in her! She's so quirky and curious! I love her artistic ability and want to see more of the world. She's feisty, brave, and shows kindness to everyone she meets! I also love her pep and optimism! TianaTiana is so beautiful! She is such a hard worker and doesn't let others diminish her dreams! She is sassy and cares so much about her family. I admire her dedication and the way she problem solves. I also really love her dress. I think it's the prettiest of all of the princesses dresses! That's the end of day 2 here! Come back everyday to learn more about my favorite and least favorite things about Disney. Let me know who your favorite princesses are in the comment section below!
For the entire month of May I've decided to do the 30 day Disney challenge. Here's what it entails So hop on back everyday to learn some new things about me! Lets start! Day 1: Favorite CharacterI have a couple but this is sooo easy! If you know anything about me then you know I love Alice from Alice in Wonderland! I love her curiosity and imagination. I feel like I am a lot like her (and I can do the perfect impression of her). She is always wanting to learn more about the world and often lives in a world of her own. ;) She can be considered naive, but is well trained and polite. She is very courageous and I feel like even if something scares her she still goes after it. She is curious for goodness sake! This can sometimes be her biggest weakness but also her biggest strength. Alice is independent and thinks for herself. Overall she is one of those characters old and young people can relate to and I wish I was her all of the time. Jessica Rabbit! She is from the movie Who Framed Rodger Rabbit and is married to toon Rodger Rabbit. Jessica is one of those characters I really really admire believe it or not! She is drawn to very scandalous and not intelligent. But as she says to Eddie Valiant in the movie, "I'm not bad , I'm just drawn that way." She proves herself to be selfless and compassionate for Rodger. Everyone wonders how they ended up together and she says it's because he makes her laugh. She truly loves him despite him not being very rich or handsome. She makes it clear throughout the movie that she is loyal beyond compare to Rodger. She breaks this stereotype of beauty and brains not being complimentary and I LOVE that! Seriously Julie Andrews though. What an icon! Not only do I love this movie but I also love the musical as well! As a nanny she is fairly stern but not in a mean way, she commands respect from people without raising her voice or lifting a finger. She considered herself to be practically perfect and lots of people respect her (including me). She is clever and classy all things I strive to be! Thanks for reading the first day of the 30 day Disney challenge! Please come back everyday to see whats next! Who are your favorite Disney characters? Please let me know in the towel section below! Have a magical day. :)
